NASA Cancels Europa Lander Mission – But Scientists Have a Plan B

NASA ditches Europa Lander mission, will the backup plan deliver the unthinkable?

Unlike traditional rovers, the Europa Lander was designed with four sturdy legs that allowed it to traverse the moon’s terrain, collect samples, and drill into the icy crust—all while operating with minimal input from Earth. This was particularly important due to the enormous communication delay caused by Europa’s distance of 568 million miles from Earth, making real-time guidance impossible. NASA officials pointed to several insurmountable obstacles, including the immense radiation exposure, the vast distance to Europa, and the very brief observation windows that would make a mission challenging.
