NASA needs your help: Everything you need to know about the Space Cloud Watch project
NASA wants your photos of a specific type of cloud in order to better understand Earth’s atmosphere.
These rare, luminous clouds form high in Earth’s atmosphere, approximately 76 to 85 kilometres above the surface, and are typically visible during twilight hours in the summer months. “ I find these clouds fascinating and can’t wait to see the amazing pictures,” said project lead Dr. Chihoko Cullens from the University of Colorado, Boulder Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. Recent studies suggest that increased atmospheric methane emissions may contribute to the formation of these clouds by producing additional water vapour in the mesosphere.
