NASA reveals 'glass-smooth lake of cooling lava' on surface of Jupiter's moon Io

The volcanic surface of Jupiter's huge moon Io got a stunning close-up thanks to NASA's Juno mission.

The cooling lava at the center of the lake is ringed by possibly molten magma around the edges, Scott Bolton, principal investigator for the Juno mission, said during a news conference Wednesday (April 16) at the European Geophysical Union General Assembly in Vienna. "There is amazing detail showing these crazy islands embedded in the middle of a potentially magma lake rimmed with hot lava," Bolton said. Stephanie Pappas is a contributing writer for Live Science, covering topics ranging from geoscience to archaeology to the human brain and behavior.
