NASA says moon mission is further delayed but hopes to land astronauts before China

The next Artemis mission, which will send four astronauts on a flight around the moon, will be delayed until 2026, NASA announced. The program is already years behind schedule.

NASA announced Thursday that the next Artemis mission, which will send four astronauts on a flight around the moon, will be delayed until 2026 — yet another postponement in a program that is already years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget. They noticed, for instance, that the heat shield was worn down in places, and that a buildup of internal pressure caused parts of the outer layer to crack and shed, NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy said. Orion’s heat shield covers the bottom of the capsule and plays a crucial role in protecting the spacecraft — and potential astronauts onboard — from the extreme temperatures of re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
