New fireproof fabric can defend EV batteries from 2,300°F flames

Japanese firm's flame-retardant fabric provides superior thermal protection for EV batteries, resisting 1,300℃ flames and preventing damage.

The latest “Asahi Kasei Automotive Consumer Survey” shows that 34 percent of non-EV owners in China prioritize safety as the key factor influencing their decision to purchase an electric car. As the EV market continues to expand, the search for innovative materials that combine strength, flexibility, and high-performance thermal protection has become a top priority for manufacturers. Lastan is offered as an advanced alternative to traditional materials for thermal runaway protection. In addition to its fire resistance, the fabric can also endure high-pressure impacts from particles between 200 and 500 microns in size—about the width of a human hair.
