New laser tech using Raman spectroscopy detects illegal elephant ivory | Non-destructive laser technology swiftly detects illegal elephant ivory.

New non-destructive laser tech provided accurate results in detecting difference between illegal and legal ivory tusk.

Ivory tusks are a feature developed in the mouth of elephants akin to human teeth; however, these deeply rooted tusks protrude beyond the jaws of the largest living land animals. According to the World Wildlife Fund, tusks are made of dentine, a hard, dense, bony tissue. These tusks have various purposes, including digging, lifting objects, gathering food, stripping bark from trees to eat, and defense.
