New laws to criminalise deepfake porn in Australia

Federal Government has announced nearly $1bn of funding and a suite of new legislation on Wednesday intended to combat a national crisis of gender-based violence.

In January, Taylor Swift became one of many celebrities to fall victim to deepfake pornography when fake pornographic images and videos of the singer were viewed more than 47 million times in just 17 hours before being deleted. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday: “Sharing sexually explicit material using technology like artificial intelligence will be subject to serious criminal penalties”. The new government reforms will also “examine options to reduce exposure to violent pornography, informed by engagement with experts and best available evidence about harms,” said Mr Albanese.
