New metal-eating ‘bullet’ thrusters could power spacecraft for near-infinite range

A new kind of space thruster, called the Super Magdrive, can use any metal as a fuel to source to power spacecraft for near-infinite ranges.

“Spacecraft have limited amounts of fuel because of the enormous cost and energy it takes to launch them into space,” Southhampton University’s lead scientist, Dr. Minkwan Kim, said. Once fitted, spacecraft could land on a comet or moon, rich in these minerals, and harvest what it needs before jetting off with a full tank,” he added. Looking ahead, Magdrive intends to launch a plasma thruster five times more powerful than the last for testing in June 2025, dubbed operation “So Much for Subtlety.”
