New weightless carbon fiber battery could make cars, planes 50% lighter | This innovative material serves a dual purpose: it acts as both a structural component and a power source, eliminating the need for additional heavy batteries.

Sinonus' carbon fiber battery could reduce vehicle weight by up to 50%, boosting efficiency and sustainability in transportation.

Sinonus, a spin-out from Chalmers University of Technology (CTU), is aimed at transforming the transportation industry with its groundbreaking carbon fiber material capable of storing electrical energy. But here, using carbon fibre, we have succeeded in designing a structural battery with both competitive energy storage capacity and rigidity,” said Leif Asp, a CTU Professor of Material and Computational Mechanics. The company is now focused on scaling up the technology for larger applications, including electric vehicles and aircraft, and is actively collaborating with industry partners to accelerate the integration of this innovative material into their designs.
