Newfound Asteroid May Hit Earth in 2032, Scientists Say

The possibility of the asteroid 2024 YR4 impacting our planet might not be ruled out until 2028, raising the prospect we’ll need to prepare for the worst

On January 27 a NASA service called Sentry, which monitors potential asteroid impacts by pooling together observations from telescopes around the world, upgraded the risk of Y24 to our planet to an unprecedented degree. A roughly 1 percent chance seems vanishingly small, and late 2032 may seem far-off, but the odds can rapidly worsen, and attempts to deflect or mitigate an impactor would require years to plan and execute. The risk of the asteroid hitting our planet could be promptly dismissed if astronomers find historical observations of YR4 from long-running surveys and gain knowledge of its trajectory over a long period of time.
