NHS offers ‘revolutionary’ blood test for cancer in world first

‘Liquid biopsies’ will be made available to lung and advanced breast cancer patients in England, speeding up access to targeted therapies

Data from the pilot scheme showed that the results of ctDNA testing allowed patients to get a treatment decision 16 days earlier than with the standard tissue biopsy approach. Professor Dame Sue Hill, the chief scientific officer for England, said it “represents a real step change in care for eligible lung and breast cancer patients on the NHS”. Dr Julie Gralow, the chief medical officer and executive vice-president of ASCO, said liquid biopsy tests were also able to be used to “live monitor” cancer and get an early warning of its progression or spread.
