Nissan agrees deal with self-driving car start-up Wayve


British company backed by Nvidia and SoftBank will install software in Japanese manufacturers’ cars from 2027

A British start-up founded in a garage has stolen a march on Tesla’s ambitions for self-driving vehicle technology by agreeing its first deal with a global car manufacturer. Wayve said its new Propilot semi-autonomous system would combine the use of camera, lidar sensor and radar, with the company’s level 2 software, which is designed to perform basic tasks autonomously, such as staying in lane or maintaining a set distance from other cars, but still requires active monitoring by a human driver. The Cambridge University students, who researched machine learning, computer vision and robotics, wanted to explore a different approach to developing driverless cars.
