The biggest draw of this device, however, was that it ran a PEN/GEOS 3.0 operating system that closely emulated the experience of running Windows 95 on a desktop PC, with applications like Notes, Calendar, Calculator, Composer, Serial Terminal, Telnet, and a world time clock. Ericsson and Motorola were similarly concerned of the potential impact on their businesses, so together with Nokia they created a joint venture called Symbian to develop an open mobile operating system that would provide equal opportunity for every player in the phone space. Ollila organized the company into something called a "matrix structure," which essentially meant the formation of four business groups – Mobile Phones, Networks, Multimedia, and Enterprise Solutions – that would share corporate resources and support functions from vertical product lines.
