Nuclear fusion: ORNL's method to identify new alloys for reactors

ORNL scientists develop new method to accelerate the development of alloys that can withstand extreme reactor conditions.

“Guided by AI, researchers can bypass the seemingly endless trial and error period to find viable alloy candidates more efficiently,” the scientists mentioned in a press release. In the following phase, the AI model will be trained using the generated data, aiming to enable scientists to explore a wide range of compounds resulting from the combination of six different elements at various concentrations. “We are trying to help the material scientists with their trial-and-error approaches in identifying the relative percentage of the different elements that need to be mixed together in order to come up with alloys that can lead to disruptive technological advances in fusion,” he concluded.
