Ofcom publishes draft online child safety rules for tech firms

In the draft codes Ofcom calls on technology firms to use “robust” age-checking and content moderation systems to keep harmful material away from children online

“The government assigned Ofcom to deliver the act and today the regulator has been clear: platforms must introduce the kinds of age-checks young people experience in the real world and address algorithms which too readily mean they come across harmful material online,” said digital secretary Michelle Donelan. Robin Tombs, CEO at biometrics firm Yoti, argued while there is “no one silver bullet when it comes to child safety”, effective age-checking tech will be an essential part in protecting children from accessing harmful content online. This is on the basis that section 122 of the act gives Ofcom powers to require technology companies to install systems that they argue would undermine the security and privacy of encrypted services by scanning the content of every message and email to check whether they contain CSAM.
