OpenAI opens first Asia office in Tokyo as ChatGPT use grows

The developer of the widely used artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT says it has opened an office in Tokyo, its first in Asia, as part of efforts to respond to growing popularity of the service in the country.

"This is just the first step in what I hope would be a long-term partnership with the people of Japan, government leaders, businesses, and research institutions," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a video message delivered at a press conference in Tokyo. The announcement came after Altman met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo in April last year, in which the top executive expressed his intent to set up an office in Japan. The company's technology is already used in some major Japanese firms such as online retail giant Rakuten Group Inc., air-conditioner maker Daikin Industries Ltd. and a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp., according to OpenAI.
