OpenAI’s Operator Lets ChatGPT Use the Web for You

The company that kicked off the AI chatbot craze now wants AI to do more than just talk.

OpenAI is letting some users try a new ChatGPT feature that uses its artificial intelligence to operate a web browser in order to book trips, buy groceries, hunt for bargains, and do many other online chores. “AI is evolving from this tool that could answer your questions to one that is also able to take action in the world, carrying out complex, multi-step workflows,” says Peter Welinder, VP of product at OpenAI. If a user were logged into the Amtrak website, or into a browser profile with stored credit card information, Operator would be able to go ahead and book a ticket—although it is designed to ask for permission first.
