People struggle to get useful health advice from chatbots, study finds

People often struggle to get useful health advice from chatbots like ChatGPT, according to a recent study.

With long waiting lists and rising costs in overburdened healthcare systems, many people are turning to AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT for medical self-diagnosis. The participants were tasked with identifying potential health conditions in the scenarios and using chatbots, as well as their own methods, to figure out possible courses of action (e.g. seeing a doctor or going to the hospital). Amazon is exploring an AI-based way to analyze medical databases for “social determinants of health.” And Microsoft is helping build AI to triage messages to care providers sent from patients.
