Poka Labs (YC S24) Is Hiring a Founding Engineer

About Poka Labs Chemicals such as dyes, adhesives, coatings, additives are in every manufactured good we use in our daily lives, yet the industry runs on paper and Excel. At Poka Labs, we’re are on a mission to revolutionize chemical manufacturing with modern software. Role: Founding Engineer Overview As the Founding Engineer at Poka Labs, you will help us bring our product V0.5 to v1.0 and well beyond. The work you’ll be doing could change rapidly depending on customer needs, but in your first 3 months you might: Visit a customer’s plant to gain a better understanding of how our software is used in their day-to-day workflows. Build a LLM based RAG system that connects to a customer’s email accounts to alert them when their supplier has a delay. Integrate with a customers’ order and inventory system Add new constraints to our optimization engine so that it can handle the shift schedules of plant personnel. Plan, design, and build new product pages in React. We hope you are excited by the breadth of work that an early-stage company requires, but are also flexible enough to adapt as plans change. Responsibilities Product Development: Collaborate with the CTO to both determine product requirements and implement them. There’s nothing worse than spending weeks building, to then realize it wasn’t the right thing, so this will involve talking with customers to make sure our product fits their needs. Infrastructure Management: We don’t have an infrastructure team so if tomorrow we decide that we need a queueing system, we’ll work together to figure out which one we can get up and running to unblock us. Customer Engagement: You won’t be hidden away from our customers. In fact, we’ll often bring you to visit plants with us. Seeing first-hand the problems we’re addressing is the best way to make sure we are building the right product. Stay up to Date on New Technologies: We are incorporating the newest LLMs into our product, in fact that’s a big reason why we think we can beat incumbents in the industry. We’ll count on you to help us evaluate what’s coming out to see if its a good fit for our product. What we’re looking for Experience: You should have experience working on both frontend and backend projects, including infrastructure and DevOps experience. After all, when your developer environment breaks, you’ll need to yourself back up and running quickly. Skills: We use Typescript, React, and Python and run on AWS. These technologies can be quick to learn, but we hope you have experience with some of them already. Communication: It is critical that you can explain highly technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Using fancy words isn’t impressive, but being able to explain why that queuing system we set up last week is failing this morning so we can make a quick decision on how to fix it, is impressive. Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving startup environment where ambiguity is common. You should be comfortable utilizing cutting edge Large Language Models as well as long-proven technologies and frameworks. Location: Based in or willing to relocate to the Bay Area or NYC.
