Polestar Is Bracing for the EV Tariff Wars. It May Not Emerge Unscathed

The carmaker says that China tariffs will impact its core product, the Polestar 2, amid growing financial pressure.

Andy Palmer, former COO of Nissan and CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda, who has four decades of experience in the automotive industry, says that Polestar is “far from out of the woods,” even if it is able to navigate its way through these tariffs, which are also set to impact EV batteries. Chinese and European officials are set to meet to discuss the tariffs after both sides accused the other of protectionism and China threatened to file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization if Europe did not back down. The true test of success, Polestar executives told investors on Tuesday, will be in Q4, when all three car models and their revenue streams are in play and the company’s South Carolina plant is up and running.
