Police fought 'disinformation war' via WhatsApp during Bristol riots

Avon & Somerset Constabulary teamed up with community leaders to correct deliberately false social media posts designed to stoke fear

Fake reports about a far-right mob gathering in Castle Park, intended to spread fear and incite a counter-protest, during the recent riots in Bristol city centre prompted the move to help officers correct false social media posts and get the word out to residents fast. Chief Constable Sarah Crew said the violence and disorder on August 3 targeting immigrants, Muslims and other minorities had left some people too scared to go out to work or places of worship and that parents were not letting their children out to play because they are worried for their safety. Chief Constable Crew said community leaders were in the force’s command room during the recent clashes to give advice on making the right decisions.
