Scientists have uncovered a mechanism for reinvigorating the immune system to stop it from flagging when it’s fighting long-term conditions like chronic infections and cancer. “Exhausted immune cells remain one of the biggest challenges in treating chronic diseases,” said Dr Daniel Utzschneider, laboratory head of the Doherty Institute’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne and one of the study’s corresponding authors. “ID3+ T cells have the remarkable ability to resist burnout and maintain a powerful immune response over time, making them particularly effective in the face of chronic infections or cancer,” said Catarina Gago da Graça, a PhD candidate at the Doherty Institute and co-lead author of the study.
