A study published earlier this year from Cheryl Thomas, a law professor at University College London, analysed jury verdicts in all crown courts in England and Wales between 2016 and 2023. Tom Franklin, the chief executive of the Magistrates’ Association, said that legal advisers — formerly known as justices’ clerks — were being poached by other employers, including law firms, because pay in the courts was not keeping pace. He acknowledged that delayed trials had direct financial implications for the criminal justice system, but emphasised that there was a “human cost for victims and defendants, who have to be brought back to court for what is often an experience that will cause the greatest impact on their lives.”
