Researchers develop a battery cathode material that does it all | A mix of iron, chlorine, and lithium is conductive, stores lithium, and self-heals.

A mix of iron, chlorine, and lithium is conductive, stores lithium, and self-heals.

It's reasonably conductive, it allows lithium ions to move around and find storage sites, and it's made of cheap and common elements. A number of papers had reported good luck with chlorine-based chemicals, which allowed ions to move readily through the material but didn't conduct electricity very well. "Cracks and voids present in the pristine Li 1.3 Fe 1.2 Cl 4 electrode are completely healed upon charging," the researchers wrote.
