Review – Ford's First Engine
[June 7, 2019 - start of page] [June 16, 2019 - updates] [June 22, 2019 - first draft completed]
The wooden base of the engine shows numerous c-clamp marks and I doubt all of them are “original.” The exhaust valve push rod was rotated 90 degrees out of position, and the flywheel was not fully on it’s shaft. It is interesting to note that there is no special provision to keep the rod properly oriented in operation, except that it would naturally tend to lie flat against the cam and thus be held in an upright position. However, and this is just my opinion based upon my observations regarding your photos, I believe Mr. Ford modified his original ignition system to make it a more consistent and reliable concept engine at a later date y adding a spark plug.
