It has nothing to do with extending the hot exhaust past the robot's body—you can clearly see the large exhaust port on the blower above—and is instead being used as a shim. "It was the closest thing in my shed I found," Enginerdz writes, "to help prop up the blower, to angle the nozzle down and hold it on position."
