his could’ve easily been 12 blog posts, but I opted for one that comprehensively captures how I feel about design on Apple platforms right now. There was immediate criticism of iOS 7’s visual design.
And now, we’ve even lost the ability to make unique icon silhouettes that Apple once specifically retained when introducing the iOS 7 aesthetic to macOS because that was a distinct element of its heritage. In fact, the rounded square icons that became the hallmark visual design characteristic of iPhone and iPhoneOS originated as a way to differentiate proper OS X apps from Dashboard widgets. It may seem like a good idea to automatically mask and apply a glass style to a stubborn third-party developer’s app icon to make it harmonize with the rest of the system.
