Russell T. Davies turned to fantasy to make Doctor Who think harder

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies chats with The Verge about monsters and space babies.

When I spoke with Davies recently ahead of the new season’s premiere, he explained that he didn’t spend much time worrying about whether superfans would gripe about changes. Reactions to newer lore establishing the Doctor as both an orphan and an abandoned child were a bit polarizing because it reworked some core aspects of the series in a really unexpected way. I kind of thought, if you put this concept of modern foundlings into a science fiction setting, it really starts to come alive, and all of these ideas about The Doctor, Ruby, and being abandoned on a church doorstep on Christmas Eve began to chime with each other.
