Russian trawlers threaten vital undersea cables in Atlantic

Intelligence agencies suspect Russia to be responsible for the damage caused to several pipelines and cables in European waters over the past five years

A Danish warship trailed a Russian trawler through the North Atlantic last week after the company that owns it was accused of taking part in underwater sabotage and surveillance operations directed by Moscow. Melkart-2, a Soviet-era trawler, arrived at the port of Klaksvik on the Faroe Islands last Wednesday to unload its catch of mackerel having been closely followed for several miles by the HDMS Knud Rasmussen, a Royal Danish navy patrol vessel. The anomaly, the result of a longstanding fishing agreement between Torshavn and Moscow, has been cause for mounting concern to European intelligence agencies because it provides Russian-flagged ships access to critical undersea cables that crisscross the Atlantic, including internet arteries that connect the UK and Europe.
