Sandwich to star power: Mayonnaise may unlock ‘never unstable’ nuclear fusion | Although mayonnaise typically behaves as a solid, when subjected to a pressure gradient, it begins to flow in a manner similar to plasma under comparable conditions.

Scientists are using mayonnaise to study plasma behavior and instability, potentially leading to breakthroughs in nuclear fusion research.

Researchers at Lehigh University are experimenting with mayonnaise to unlock the secrets of nuclear fusion, a potential source of limitless, clean energy. The “team used a custom-built, one-of-a-kind rotating wheel facility within Banerjee’s Turbulent Mixing Laboratory to mimic the flow conditions of the plasma,” explained the press release. While the properties of mayonnaise differ significantly from those of the plasma used in fusion experiments, the researchers believe that their findings can be applied to a wide range of materials.
