Satellite data detects 1,256 methane super-emitter events in 3+ years | The data covering the period from January 2019 to June 2023, observed the occurrence of 1,256 methane super-emitter events.

Satellite data reveals 1,256 methane super-emitter events from January 2019 to June 2023, resulting from organic waste decomposition in landfills.

Methane is one of the biggest polluters affecting the environment, being the "primary contributor to the formation of ground-level ozone, a hazardous air pollutant, and greenhouse gas, exposure to which causes 1 million premature deaths every year," the UN. Earlier today, The Guardian revealed over 1,000 huge leaks of methane from landfill waste dumps since 2019. These leaks occur when organic waste decomposes in landfills, emitting methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
