Scientists developed a novel method to detect lies

Can you spot a liar? Although almost all of us tell a lie once in a while, we are remarkably bad at consistently and accurately spotting them. A team of researchers developed a unique method to identify liars.

In this article, psychologist and mental health expert Cody Porter explains a unique technique to identify liars that she and a team of fellow researchers developed. We have developed a new approach to spot liars based on interviewing technique and psychological manipulation, with results just published in the Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition. Specifically, interviewers make it clear to interviewees that if they provide longer, more detailed statements about the event of interest, then the investigator will be better able to detect if they are telling the truth or lying.
