Scientists Find Promising Indication of Extraterrestrial Life—124 Light-Years Away
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope confirmed the planet K2-18b has traces of dimethyl sulfide, a potential biosignature of marine microorganisms.
With the help of the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers have detected what they believe could be biosignatures of marine microorganisms on K2-18b, an exoplanet located in the habitable zone of its parent star 124 light-years away. This exoplanet is one of the leading potential examples of a Hycean planet, a theoretical class of worlds characterized by having vast liquid oceans and a hydrogen-rich atmosphere. “We didn’t know for sure whether the signal we saw last time was due to DMS, but just the hint of it was exciting enough for us to have another look with JWST using a different instrument,” said Nikku Madhusudhan, the scientist who led the research, in a press release.
