Scientists move to Bluesky, transitioning away from X and Meta platforms


A photograph of a short-eared owl mid-flight was the last Instagram post biology professor Carl Bergstrom shared before announcing his departure from the platform Jan. 10.

Harassment policies were rolled back, disinformation became more prevalent, and algorithms were manipulated, making it more difficult for science to shine through the trending online fights and discourse. Bergstrom left X in 2022, and abandoned his Instagram account when Meta ended their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and changed their policies to “allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation.” Bergstrom and Shiffman noted that the tone on Bluesky has shifted from general “shop talk,” such as assistance on matrix models, toward concern as the Trump administration continues to target science and its funding.
