Scientists reportedly hiding AI text prompts in academic papers to receive positive peer reviews | Artificial intelligence (AI)

Research papers found carrying hidden white text giving instructions not to highlight negatives as concern grows over use of large language models for peer review

Nikkei reported on 1 July it had reviewed research papers from 14 academic institutions in eight countries, including Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore and two in the United States. The arrival of widely available commercial large language models has presented challenges for a range of sectors, including publishing, academia and law. Last year the journal Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology drew media attention over the inclusion of an AI-generated image depicting a rat sitting upright with an unfeasibly large penis and too many testicles.
