Sex Robots—A Harbinger for Emerging AI Risk

Sex Robots – A Harbinger for Emerging AI RiskGalaitsi, S.E.1, Christine Hendren2, Benjamin Trump3, Igor Linkov41 Credere Associates2 Duke University3 University of Lisbon and US Army Engineer Research and Development Center4 Carnegie Mellon University and US Army Engineer Research and Development Center corresponding authorAbstractArtificial intelligence is trickling into many industries, yet its most urgent near-term business case lies with sex robots. The improved capacity to interact with users is a disruptive characteristic for such products which could increase their usage and risk exposure as well as introduce their innovations into more mainstream products. The potential growth in user rates, coupled with the risks and implications of such AI-enabled sex dolls and robots, present an urgent challenge for governments to act on behalf of the safety of their citizens. Policymakers and other key stakeholders have a narrowing window to proactively address the risks and implications of these technologies before their AI and machine learning enhancements dramatically amplify the threats that they pose.IntroductionArtificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more commonplace in all aspects of the developed world, where robots might help with tasks as diverse as hospital operations to defusing explosives (Murphy & Murphy, 2000; Weng et al., 2009; Linkov et al., 2018). Historically, the sex industry has been on forefront of implementation of innovative technologies, and integrat...

Such risks including lax security measures that allow uninvited parties to collect and store usage information or videos, or the potential hacking of remotely operated sex toys ( Hern, 2016; Burgess, 2018; Devlin, 2018). The CPSC oversees sex toy sales, but does not mandate or implement any labeling standards or testing, and the FDA has regulatory control over a small number of vibrators still archaically classified as obstetrical and gynecological medical devices. The drivers of the privacy shroud for sex-based technologies (e.g., misogynistic or religion-influenced views of normative sexuality) should be examined and in some cases challenged in order to forecast and responsibly manage future risks.
