Shift Left Is the Tip of the Iceberg

A transformative change is underway for semiconductor design and EDA. New languages, models, and abstractions will need to be created.

On the surface, shift left may look like a minor change involving optimization strategies, or the introduction of new metrics, but this is a fundamental move from an insular semiconductor perspective to the start of the systems’ age of design. “The goal in design closure is to optimize across multiple variables, based on certain conditions or inputs provided by the user,” says Manoj Chacko, senior director of product management at Synopsys. New tools and methodologies have to produce good results based on the level of investment they require, both from the EDA perspective and the design houses, and they need to keep in mind the long-term direction and goals.
