Some giraffe-related content may be censored by Beijing, joining Winnie the Pooh and Peppa Pig — after giraffes became a social media symbol of discontent with the Chinese economy

Giraffes aren't outright banned on Weibo, but hashtags like #TheGiraffeIncident were blocked when the animals became the center of a wave of discontent.

Winnie the Pooh is an infamous topic of sensitivity for China because dissidents often compare leader Xi Jinping to the portly bear. "According to relevant laws, regulations, and policies, the content of this topic is not displayed," a notice on Weibo said when Business Insider checked the hashtag. The post doesn't mention China and instead promotes US efforts to track down endangered giraffes in Africa using GPS technology.
