Spain turns cemeteries into solar powerhouses, aims 440,000 kW by 2030 | Put together, the cemeteries within city limits will generate 440,000 kW of electricity every year.
The city of Valencia has ambitious plans of developing the largest urban solar farm by using solar panels in its cemeteries.
The Spanish city of Valencia has an innovative plan to generate clean energy—turning cemeteries into hubs of green energy by installing solar panels on top. The project is part of the Valencia 2030 Climate Mission, under which the city intends to meet 27 percent of its energy demand from renewable sources and use it for public infrastructure. Unlike large-scale solar farms, where agricultural land may also be converted into an electricity generation center, the cemetery space continues to be available to the public as before, except that it is also producing energy now.
