Steve Albini has died
The Shellac and Big Black frontman, who recorded classic albums by Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, and more, has died of a heart attack
Steve Albini, an icon of indie rock as both a producer and performer, has died of a heart attack, staff at his recording studio, Electric Audio, confirm to Pitchfork. After early work on Surfer Rosa, Slint ’s Tweez, and the Breeders ’ Pod, he became synonymous with live-sounding analog production that carried palpable raw energy. His unparalleled résumé in the late 1980s and ’90s includes the Jesus Lizard ’s influential early albums, the Wedding Present ’s Seamonsters, Brainiac ’s Hissing Prigs in Static Couture, as well as records by Low, Dirty Three, Boss Hog and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Superchunk, and dozens more.
