Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI


Turnitin, a service that checks papers for plagiarism, says its detection tool found millions of papers that may have a significant amount of AI-generated content.

Students have submitted more than 22 million papers that may have used generative AI in the past year, new data released by plagiarism detection company Turnitin shows. A year ago, Turnitin rolled out an AI writing detection tool that was trained on its trove of papers written by students as well as other AI-generated texts. Instructors have tried at times to find their own solutions to detecting AI in writing, using messy, untested methods to enforce rules, and distressing students.
