Superhuman vision lets robots see through walls, smoke with new LiDAR-like eyes | AI-powered PanoRadar turns radio waves into 3D views, offering robots LiDAR-like vision at lower cost.

University of Pennsylvania researchers use AI-processed radio waves to enable robots "see" in 3D, navigating smoke, glass, and walls.

“This innovation in AI-powered perception has the potential to improve multi-modal systems, helping robots operate more effectively in challenging environments like search and rescue missions or autonomous vehicles,” said the team, in a video posted on YouTube. Another hurdle involved teaching the system to interpret complex indoor environments, which they addressed by training the AI to recognize patterns in radar signals, much like human perception. Using LiDAR for initial verification, the system refined its understanding, demonstrating superior tracking in smoke-filled areas and mapping spaces with glass walls, which traditional sensors often struggle to detect.
