Long’s lengthy battle with his former landlord — a self-described community advocate who has positioned himself as an anti-homelessness leader — has been an uneven fight, one similar to that faced by many Ontario tenants. Long had been living at 73 Cartwright St. for five years when a numbered company bought the small duplex, which sits on a short, quiet street across from an elementary school and close to downtown. As soon as the sale closed on July 31, 2019, according to the LTB decision, three men came knocking on Long’s door, asking him to sign an agreement to end his tenancy and move out within two weeks, in exchange for $550.
