Telegram Faces Fresh Probe In South Korea Over Deepfake Porn After Durov Charged In France

South Korean police said it is investigating whether Telegram’s hands-off approach to moderation could be allowing digital crime to flourish as French prosecutors charge billionaire founder Pavel Durov with enabling criminality on the app.

South Korean police on Monday announced a probe into the beleaguered messaging app Telegram for its alleged role in distributing AI-generated, deepfake pornography, according to newsreports, just days after its billionaire co-founder and CEO Pavel Durov was charged in France with allowing criminality to flourish on the platform. Concerns regarding Telegram extend beyond digital sex crimes and the platform has come under fire for a variety of problems including its use by terrorists and far-right extremists, drug trafficking, child sexual abuse material and fraud.
