Tesla challenges $243 million verdict in Autopilot death trial


The company's lawyers blame the driver (who settled with the victims separately) for the crash, and the plaintiffs' lawyers for "overwhelming" the jury with "irrelevant evidence."

Tesla has asked a judge to nix the$243 million verdict lodged against the company in a lawsuit involving its Autopilot system, or to allow a new trial to occur, according to a new court filing. Allowing the verdict to stand, they argue, would “deter innovation, confound consumer expectations, and lead manufacturers to abandon safety enhancements for fear of being subjected to large punishments when a driver misuses their product.” He previously worked at The Verge, where he also covered consumer technology, hosted many short- and long-form videos, performed product and editorial photography, and once nearly passed out in a Red Bull Air Race plane.
