Texas Wins $1.4 Billion Biometric Settlement Against Meta. It Would Have Happened Sooner With Consumer Enforcement

The Texas settlement is welcome, but it also highlights the need to give consumers their own private right of action to enforce consumer data privacy laws.

Despite two and a half years of negotiations, the draft treaty authorizes extensive surveillance powers without robust safeguards, omitting essential data protection principles. For the past year, EFF has been sounding the alarm about police in California illegally sharing drivers' location data with anti-abortion states, putting abortion seekers and providers at risk of prosecution. This extraordinarily misguided and speech-chilling call to label social media platforms as harmful to adolescents is shameful fear-mongering that lacks scientific evidence and turns the nation’s top physician into a censor.
