The City of San Antonio immediately installed stop logs upstream of the gate to block the flow and prevent the water level in the River Walk from dropping. These are big, heavy items in awkward positions, so each time they move, disconnect, or lift something out of the work area, they have to do it thoughtfully and carefully to ensure it's done safely. If you visited the River Walk during construction, you wouldn’t have even known it was happening, and that was the entire goal of the project: revitalize a critical part of the city’s flood control infrastructure without causing any negative impacts on one of its crown jewels.
