Figure A shows how annual earnings for a full-time minimum wage worker fall short of the poverty line for a household of any size. If lawmakers were serious about lifting families out of poverty and enabling them to fully participate in the labor force, they would be enacting policies to raise wages and expand access to good-paying jobs. By keeping wages low and making it more challenging to access benefits, lawmakers are seeking to deprive low-income households of the resources they need to thrive.
