It’s called the Tufts Food Compass, touted as “the most comprehensive and science-based nutrient profiling system to date.” After 3 years of work and millions in NIH funding, the study found that Lucky Charms are healthier than whole milk, twice as healthy as beef, and better for you than a baked potato or cooked green peas. That means that the Lucky Charms health guidelines made up at places like Tufts become the source material that overworked, nutritionally uninformed doctors and nurses reference when they make recommendations to their sick patients. Then, when these poorer populations inevitably get sick and die (15 years earlier than their wealthier, healthier contemporaries), the American taxpayer again comes out of pocket to pay for their healthcare costs — 85% of which goes towards managing food-borne chronic disease.
