We left the World Wide Web for social media and we got locked in to algorithm driven walled-gardens, and we don’t even have a wall any more, we have a stream and all manner of refuse flows through it. The modern JavaScript heavy, framework driven, post-processed, package imported tool chain is just a very fancy, very complicated, and very automated way to deliver HTML. What these rebellious programmers are building goes by many names — indieweb, yesterweb, folk internet — and relies on simple design choices, often borrowing elements from the 1980s and 1990s.
